Public Forum Series Over the past four decades, a serious debate has developed amongst social theorists concerning the state of civic engagement in the United States, and of the secondary associations that support it. Some see a citizenry divided and fragmented, while others see signs of renewed commitment to community and country. But all agree that the institutions that support and promote civic engagement and civic education must be nurtured and nourished; without them, democracy cannot flourish. Toward that end, the Center for Free Inquiry at Hanover College is pleased to announce its Public Forum Series. Several times throughout the year, in cities around the country, the Center will sponsor a full afternoon or evening of education and discussion on topics and issues that are at the heart of a democratic community. Each forum will begin with a brief presentation of ideas by a featured speaker, be followed by a reaction and discussion from panel members, and conclude with an exchange of ideas between panel members and the audience.
