Crowe Academy The Native
American in History and Myth Since the Europeans first arrived in North America the peoples they termed "Indians" have struggled to retain their cultural identities. This effort has proved desperate, because of the force of the European juggernaut, and because of the weight of myth and symbolism imposed upon them. At various times the Native American has been seen as an icon of noble primitivism, coarse savagery, and environmental saintliness. This year's Crowe Academy - The Native American in History and Myth - will explore the gap between legend and reality in the portrayal of Native Americans in literature, film and historical memory.
