Life on the River

"When we presently got under way and went poking down the broad Ohio, I became a new being, and the subject of my own admiration," observed Mark Twain's hopeful cub-pilot in Life on the Mississippi. The Ohio and Mississippi rivers have long been objects of Americans' fascination, representing timelessness and natural beauty, restless commerce and westward expansion, a boundary between enslaved and free, and a prospect of freedom and adventure. The 2003 Crowe Academy -- Life on the River -- will explore Americans' engagement with these two historically significant rivers.

| Crowe Academy participants will be treated to a cruise on the Spirit of Jefferson which is based in Louisville, Kentucky. Dinner will be served aboard this romantic vessel. | |
