Featured Speakers:

  • Michelle Bartel, Chaplain at Hanover College since 2001, holds a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. Rev. Dr. Bartel is the author of What it Means to be Human, a book in the Foundations of Christian Faith series. Her research interests include discernment, providence, vocation, and eschatology. Rev. Dr. Bartel is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
  • Ken Bevis, Assistant Professor of Geology at Hanover College since 2000, is a 1987 graduate of Grand Valley State University, and earned his Ph.D. from Oregon State University in 1995. He specializes in Glacial Geology and Soil Science.
  • James M. Cox, Keynote Speaker, is a professor emeritus of American Literature at Dartmouth College. He is the author of Mark Twain: The Fate of Humor and Recovering Literature's Lost Ground: Essays in American Autobiography as well as articles such as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court: The Machinery of Self-Preservation," "Pudd'nhead Wilson: The End of Mark Twain's American Dream," and "A Hard Book to Take," about the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He is currently retired to his family farm in Virginia.
  • The Spirit of Jefferson Although she can't speak in words, this authentic Paddle wheel steamboat speaks volumes about life on the river.
  • Ted Eden, Associate Professor of English at Hanover College since 1991, is a 1986 graduate of Dartmouth College, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and specializes in African-American Literature and World Literature.
  • Kadie Engstrom, Cruise Lecturer, is Education Coordinator for the Belle of Louisville and the Spirit of Jefferson.
  • Judith Moffett, Winner of the 1988 John W. Campbell Award for best new author, Judith Moffett is best known in science fiction for her Hefn novels, The Ragged World and Time, Like an Ever-Rolling Stream. A 1964 graduate of Hanover College, Dr. Moffett earned her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her Hefn series, she has published other novels, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and a translation of classic Swedish poems.
  • Darrin Rubino, Assistant Professor of Biology at Hanover College since 2002, is a graduate of Thiel College, earned his Ph.D. from Ohio University, and specializes in Forest Ecology. He is interested in forest disturbance reconstruction and uses tree rings to understand the influence of historical human impacts and natural process on forest structure, function, and composition.
