The desire to explore and understand our world characterizes humanity, and technological progress has only expanded our horizons.  Why have explorers set out for the unknown, with its challenges, hardships, and dangers?  What have been the consequences of our ventures?  Where does our future lie?  Join the 2008 Crowe Academy on our expedition to discover the stories of exploration from the age of sail to the space age.  Through engaging presentations, collegial discussion, film, and a special library exhibit, accompany the bold explorers of mysterious lands, daunting rivers, and the realm beyond earth.

This book will be sent to all registrants as soon as the full registration fee is received in our office. We recommend you allow yourself 2 months to read and enjoy this book before attending Crowe Academy.

 

 

Featured Speakers

Janice Voss is Lead of the Astronaut Office Payloads Branch at NASA's Johnson Space Center.  She received her Ph.D. in Aeronautics/Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  An astronaut since 1991, Dr. Voss has served on five space flights aboard the Shuttle (spending 49 days in space and traveling 18.8 million miles through 779 earth orbits).  For three years until November 2007, she was Science Director for the Kepler Mission, a spacecraft that will trail the earth looking for earth-sized planets near distant stars.  For a more detailed biography, see http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/voss-jan.html

Daniel P. Murphy is Professor of History at Hanover College and a popular Crowe Academy presenter. No stranger to Hanover, Murphy earned his B.A. here in 1981 and joined the faculty at Hanover in 1988. In 1996, Dr. Russell Nichols, enlisted Dan to be director of the Center for Free Inquiry. Murphy teaches courses in Western Civilization and American History, with a specialization in American military and cultural history.  His book Everything American Revolution will appear in September.

Jeffrey C. Brautigam is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Hanover College.  A recipient of a Ph. D. in history from the University of Florida, he has taught European History at the college level for 15 years. The author of  5 Steps to a 5:  AP European History (McGraw-Hill, 2008) and A Student Introduction to Charles Darwin (Kendall/Hunt, 1999), Professor Brautigam is a historian who writes for students and general audiences.

Pete Worcester is Professor of Geology and Natural Sciences Division Head at Hanover College. Worcester joined the Hanover College Geology Department in 1972.  In addition to introductory geology courses, he teaches mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and geographic information science.  He has taught Hanover’s geology field course in New Mexico and Miami (Ohio) University’s geology field course in Wyoming.

NEW FOR 2008!

Hanover College will offer Continuing Renewal Units (CRU) for Indiana Teachers attending Crowe Academy. Details coming soon.

For Illinois Continuing Education Credit for High School Teachers: A 3-5 page synopsis of the three-day program must be submitted for our archives no later than July 31, 2008. It is the responsibility of the teacher to complete the appropriate forms.
