The United States is a nation of immigrants. The Statue of Liberty stands proudly in New York Harbor welcoming the huddled masses of the world who yearn to breathe free. We take pride in the melting pot that has made generations of immigrants American. Yet there has always been tension in America between newcomers and those whose forebears arrived on these shores earlier. In our own time many fear that the numbers of people flocking into the United States have grown too great to assimilate.

The Importance of Immigration for America. March 7, 2006 - 7-9 pm Frazier Arms Museum, Louisville Kentucky
Though it was formed as a nation of immigrants, the U.S. today experiences a flow of immigrants that has further stoked the tension between newcomers and those whose ancestors arrived earlier. Some argue that recent migration threatens our national identity, puts unacceptable strain on our schools and social services, and enhances the threat of terrorism. Others insist that new immigrants create a more diverse and vibrant society.
Symposium to examine new U.S.-European relationship
Although they have been bound together in a strong alliance since the 1940s, the U.S. and Europe today find themselves confronting international issues with increasingly different philosophies and methods. Such issues as global terrorism, a new wave of migration from Middle Eastern and African nations, the emergence of independent nations once behind the Iron Curtain, and the formation of the European Union, strain the traditional partnership.
Ben Franklin was a Great Success
This year's Crowe Academy, "Benjamin Franklin, American Sage" was a tremendous success. During informal exit interviews, participants indicated it was the best ever.
